Abstract:

The demand for complex engineering design is increasing due to various technological growth in manufacturing industries. The generation of complex designs requires optimization of several factors during machining for achieving sustainable growth. In this work, machining of Inconel 718 by using Wire Electric Discharge Machine is demonstrated, and responses of several input parameters on Material Removal Rate and Surface Roughness are studied. The super alloys of Inconel 718 are recognized for their difficulties in machining in order to meet high precision manufacturing needs. The Taguchi Orthogonal Array (OA) methodology is utilized for statistical design of experiments to evaluate optimal input parameters. It has the limitation of identifying optimal parameter settings for only a single output response in machining. Therefore, a joint fuzzy AHP-fuzzy TOPSIS technique is utilized for multiple output responses, which can be effectively employed for input parameters optimization. The TOPSIS methodology has an advantage over other methods, such as VIKOR, PROMETHEE and ELECTRE etc., as it addresses relative risk and benefit to yield an optimized solution. This implementation of multi-criteria decision making can yield a promising solution for achieving sustainability in manufacturing industries. Therefore, this novel approach can aid in enhancing the machining of super alloys in advanced manufacturing.
